This week we read and analyzed one of my favorite holiday stories, "Gift of the Magi". We made inferences about Jim and Della, and then created our own "up to date" adaptation. Based on our inferences, we decided what Jim and Della would be like in 2015. Lastly, we viewed "Gift of the Magi" and compared the video to the O'Henry short story.

How can I put my inferencing skills (and writing skills) to the test in a real world situation?12/11/2015 December 7-11We had an exciting week this week! 3 crimes took place in all 3 language arts classrooms! We had to use our inferencing skills we have been working on to asses each crime scene and figure out what happened. Then, we had to figure out how all of the crimes were related. We created news scripts, newspaper articles, or web articles to explain each crime scene.
November 30-December 4This week we began by looking at multiple commercials to show that inferences are made all the time. The next day, we did a gallery walk to make inferences from different photos and we went over the difference in an observation and an inference. The rest of the week students completed a project where they looked at multiple suitcases (check them out on 'class links' if you'd like) and created a character and story based on the suitcase. At that point, they practiced inferences and also their writing skills.
